WhyIsMyEmailLate is a free, browser-based tool that decodes raw email headers to show you exactly where and why an email was delayed. Every email you send or receive passes through a chain of mail transfer agents (MTAs), each one recording a timestamp when it received and forwarded the message.
This tool parses each "Received:" header, normalizes all timestamps to UTC, calculates the latency delta between each server handoff, and visually highlights the exact hop where the biggest delay occurred — in plain English, not technical jargon.
Built with a privacy-first architecture: all parsing runs in your browser via JavaScript. Zero data is transmitted to any server. The optional PII masking feature redacts email addresses and IP addresses from the displayed output without modifying your original data.
Delay readings are for diagnostic reference only — they depend on timestamps self-reported by each mail server and may be affected by clock synchronization errors or MTA misconfiguration.
WhyIsMyEmailLate is built and maintained by Dhaval Kamdar, an independent developer based in the Chicago, Illinois area. The tool was created to give IT professionals, business users, and anyone dealing with email delivery issues a fast, private, and genuinely useful way to understand what happened to their message — without sending data to a third-party server.
